Newly inducted New York Supreme Court Justice Rachel Freier is breaking barriers, becoming the first Hasidic female judge to serve on the state’s highest court. Many came together in Downtown Brooklyn on Wednesday for her swearing in, including three Holocaust survivors. Two of those survivors are Freier’s 100-year-old father-in-law and her 99-year-old aunt. Elected officials and Freier’s daughter were also present, praising Freier’s commitment to outreach in Brooklyn law and giving back to the community. “Whenever there was anyone who needed help, and she knew that she would be able to do it, she jumped in whole heartedly without hesitation,” said Leah Freier, Rachel Freier’s daughter. Freier says that while her journey to this moment was filled with opposition, her Jewish faith helped to keep her on the path forward.
