From Homelessness Back To Hasidic Judaism: The Story Of Meilech Kohn

Meilech Kohn, originally named Elimeilech Kohn, grew up in a Satmar family residing in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He is the first cousin of renowned singer Lipa Schmeltzer. Although he initially distanced himself from the Hasidic community of his upbringing, he later returned to it during his adult years. This personal journey is reflected in his music, which encompasses a diverse range of influences such as Techno music, Mediterranean pop, hints of trip-hop, and the melodic tapestry woven from a life enriched by travel, attentive listening, and emotional vulnerability. In 2016, he achieved unexpected success with his popular song “VeUhavata,” propelling him from relative obscurity to fame. Meilech has been homeless, divorced, and running away from his community for many years and his story of teshuva is one of a kind.
